Group 1 Blog

“Young Blood”
This picture was taken from a website that depicts the negative social commentations of younger societies.   This website also showed other popular stereotypes.  The picture has examples of what activities that society believes that “young” people take part in.  It is a generalization of todays “young” as a whole.
The pictures comes from this website http://listphobia.com/2010/09/28/10-most-funny-nonracial-stereotypes/ . This website is by Ahsan Mikhtar.  He is a problogger, engineer and photographer.   This picture was taken from one of his blogs that was titled "10 most funny non-racial stereotypes."  The purpose of this blog was to show the public some common stereostypes in society.  He also does this to bring out the humor in modern day stereotypes.

  1. I feel like older societies always depict younger ones in a negative way. Yes, young people do take part in some in some of those activities, but that is only a certain group of people. I would say a large majority of people do not fall under this stereotype, and are actually partaking in other activities.

    1. I agree that a small group of people can ruin a reputation for the whole group. For example, a small ring of students from my high school got arrested for heroin use and our school got the nickname, "Heroin High", by the surrounding cities.

  2. I agree with Michael that it is kind of biased to conclude today’s “young” as whole. But we still can not ignore that the tendency of some parts of young people live in negative way. Because nowadays teenager get the information so quickly from the media or internet and too much information are not suitable for them. “Young” may not have ability to define the right or wrong so that easily go astray. And I still believe that education is best way to avoid that situation.

  3. The pictures on the right appear to be of school dances; the top picture of a formal dance and the bottom picture of a casual dance. There is nothing wrong with these pictures by themselves, but when they are combined with the picture on the left, they become highly stigmatized. In fact, improper drug use by any age is highly stigmatized by most members in our society. Because the "young" are viewed as curious, irresponsible, and immature, it is easy to tack on the stigma of improper drug use as well.

  4. I feel like I am not very well aware of the context of the picture. Is the article containing this picture trying to warn youths about the rising tendency of people immerse in negative lifestyle or is it just a article trying to summarize nowadays youths’characteristics? if the former, then it shouldn't be considered as an overgeneralized stigma.

    1. To clear up your confusion, we took the image as portraying generalization of activities society believes the younger generation is taking part in. Although, you raise a very good point, I think the entire class can expand on this topic further if they view it as a warning rather than a generalization.

  5. In the picture on the left, there seems to be a lot of unfair and improper grouping using terms and images. Sex, drugs, alcohol, make up, cigarettes, these things may be part of the youth stereotype, but are also heavily prevalent in the adult population, often where they become addictions or crutches. The adding of terms such as "school, personality, love" are all extremely unfair; these characterize the youth population but it is arguable terms such as "school" have absolutely nothing to do with negative teen stereotypes. By adding neutral terms associated with teens into the mix of stereotype, the picture is directly and very unfairly tying these things exclusively to youth.

  6. I think you all did a good job pointing out the materials the implications of the age were written on. I would say now to look at the other items in the container and the colors of the objects as well and see what connections we can make with those. I see a guitar pick and multiple earrings. What implications would these be leading to? Does this change the group being targeted as well.

  7. I also agree that the older society believes that the younger generation is "bad". They associate negative stereotypes of drugs, partying, sex, and alcohol with the younger society. The entire young society should not be associated with these stereotypes. There are many people that don't engage in these. Usually people like to point out the negatives of a person or group. A small portion of the younger societies fit in to the stereotypes but the older society likes to apply it to the entire younger society. I think that people in bands and people that are more willing to be deviant and move away from the "norm" are targeted more.

  8. Though I'd agree to a large extent that older society often classifies the younger generations as more rebellious and "bad" as a whole, they aren't the only ones who do so. Even the younger generations themselves classify their peers. The greatest example of this lies in the stereotypical high school class that is divided into cliques like the jocks, the nerds, the 'popular' kids, etc. The picture in question is just another depiction of how one group of people is being stereotyped by a different group in society.

  9. The picture on the left says alcohol, cigarettes, parties, school, sex, etc and is what society believes “young” people do. Why? It sounds to me like this is what a lot of people do regardless of age. The only word lacking on the picture is “work.”
Also even if this is what “society” today thinks of young people they didn’t do any of these when THEY were young?

  10. This picture strongly reveals the comparison of what some people think a thing is and what the thing actually is. We should understand that one do not have the right to criticize anything unless he has investigated the whole thing. The photographer gives a name of "10 most funny non-racial stereotypes" to explain the words appeared in the left part of the picture such as alcohol, cigarette are the common stereotypes towards the young given by others, who may just hear about a little piece of the minority of young people and then apply the stereotypes to all of them.

  11. When I look at this picture what sticks out to me most is that from what I can tell there is only one positive word in that mixture "school". All the rest of the words are what I believe some older generations generalize as the focus younger people today. I agree with Ryan's questioning of the activities that older generations partook in when they were younger. I think it may just be the constant age gap that causes the generalization and misunderstanding. I also think that though this image only really pertains to the views of the younger generations these days, similar images could have been made for older generations by the generations that looked down upon them.

  12. I believe that this social stigma is a complex one to fully understand because of its relationship between the idea of maturity and youth. This image incorrectly mixes idea of youth and topics of social immaturity/rebellion (ei: drug use, party culture). On the left panel of the image the "vibrancy" of youth is seen in the bright colors. The words in this panel mix common aspects of youth "friends, love, personality and school" with actions that draw moral scrutiny such as "alcohol, parties, pills, cigarettes and sex" along with multiple pictures of pills and partying. The large amount of drug use, partying and extramarital sex by an individual is believed to show that the moral character of a person as low.

This image is effective at extending the negative stereotype of youth as immature, self-centered and reckless. Mikhtar fails to draw upon the positive actions and aspects of the youth in the world including creativity, purity and self-sacrifice. The youth of today are the innovators of tomorrow and the rapid pace of technological improvement are evident of a youth that has been able to solve the problems of the older generations. To characterize the youth of the nation as reckless (mainly attributed to "chemical imbalances" in the body due to growth) is a gross mischaracterization of the youth of the world.
